Student Support FAQ
Try these solutions before contacting support. Most issues can be resolved in a few minutes!
Course Access & Enrollment
I can't find my course / "Course not found" error
Most common cause: You haven't enrolled in the course yet.
Solution:
- Check LEARN for enrollment instructions specific to your course
- Go to the course enrollment page
- You will need to sign in if you haven't already
- Find the link on the enrollment page for your course
- Click the course-specific link and then click the "Enroll Now" button on the course page
Note: You must be signed in BEFORE clicking the enrollment link.
The course says it's not available yet / "Coming Soon"
Cause: The instructor hasn't opened the course for enrollment yet.
Solution:
- Check the course start date in LEARN
- Most courses open at 5:00 PM EST on the first day of term
- Wait until the scheduled time and try again
I'm enrolled but only see my old course from last term
Cause: Old courses stay active until the course team archives them.
Solution:
- You can safely ignore old courses
- Make sure you've enrolled in the current term course (see enrollment instructions above)
- Both courses can appear on your dashboard at the same time
Login & Browser Issues
I can't log in / page won't load / getting strange errors / 502 Bad Gateway error
Most common cause: Your browser cookies need to be cleared.
Solution - try these in order:
- Clear ALL your browser cookies (IMPORTANT):
- Follow these instructions
- ⚠️ CRITICAL: When prompted for time range, select "All time" or "Everything"
- Do NOT use "Last hour" or "Last day" - this won't fix the problem
- This is especially important for 502 errors - your uwaterloo.ca cookies get too large and cause the server to reject your request
- Restart your browser completely after clearing cookies
- Then try logging in again
We know clearing all cookies is annoying (you'll be logged out of everything). If you're comfortable doing it, you can try deleting ONLY cookies for
*.uwaterloo.cadomains instead - search online for "how to delete cookies for specific site [your browser name]" for instructions. But if that seems complicated, just clear everything - it's faster and guaranteed to work. - Try Incognito/Private mode (this bypasses cookies temporarily)
- Disable browser extensions:
- Ad blockers and security extensions can interfere
- Temporarily disable them and retry
- Try a different browser:
- Chrome, Firefox, and Edge all work well
- Safari can sometimes have issues
Clearing ALL cookies (not just recent ones) fixes 502 errors and most login issues.
Forum access error / "You don't have permission"
Cause: Your account wasn't automatically created in the forum database.
Solution:
- Contact support to manually create your forum account
- Log back in after receiving confirmation
Marmoset Access
I can't access Marmoset / not enrolled in Marmoset course
Cause: TAs manually add students to Marmoset.
Solution:
- Email your course TA and ask them to add you
- Include your UW userid in the email
- This is not an Open edX issue
